Unsatisfied with his alma mater, William and Mary, which focused on religion and shorted science, Jefferson - along with former Presidents Monroe and Madison - created a university that had 8 schools: medicine, law, mathematics, chemistry, ancient languages, modern languages, natural philosophy, and moral philosophy.

In 1821, when he was just 2 years old, on July 10th, the United States took possession of the recently acquired territory of Florida from Spain. Spain could no longer afford to support the area so, through a treaty, the US received East and West Florida. Future President Andrew Jackson briefly served as governor of the territory.
