He married Mary Ellen (Gawthorne) Oleary, and had children Margaret Mary Caffyn, Hilda Lillian O'Leary, Stephen John O'Leary, Fran Isabella Oleary, Rita (O'Leary) Barker, Florence Eileen (O'Leary) Kandlin, Stephen William O'Leary, and Patrick Joseph O'Leary. Stephen O'Leary died at age 65 years old on May 25, 1945 at St. Vincent's Hospital, in Fitzroy, and was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery in Parkville, City of Melbourne County, VIC.

He had five siblings: Catherine "Kate" Mary, Timothy, Louisa Kate, John Francis, and Catherine. He also had a brother, Charles Henry Garland (1867 - 1949). Stephen O'Leary married Mary Ellen Gawthorne (1883 - 1925) in 1902 in Victoria, Australia. They had children Margaret "Maggie", Patricia May, Ruby Veronica, Mary Ellen, Hilda Lily, Stephen John, Frances Isabella, Rita, Florence Eileen, Stephen William, and Patrick Joseph. Stephen O'Leary was arrested on November 19, 1901 for damaging property and sentenced to three months or a fine. His occupation was described as a "driver". He had grey eyes and black hair and had blue dots on both lower arms, with a scar on the back of his right hand.
