    Stephen Petric FORMER BUILDER SUCCUMBS AT 68 Stephen John Petric, Klamath Falls, died Saturday at Merle West Medical Center He was 68. Mr. Petric was born September 15, 1914, in Chicago to Marin and Edith Petric. He married Ann Svalina in Chicago in 1935. She preceded him in death on May 6. Mrs Petric was a builder and land developer before his retirement. He was also a member of the Klamath Falls Elks Club. He is survived by a son, Michael Petric, Walnut Creek, California; a daughter, Ann Petric, Klamath Falls; three grandchildren: one great-granddaughter; and his mother, Edith LeMarche, Klamath Falls. Private cremation services were held Saturday at Eternal Hills Crematory with Bill Davenport officiating. - October 3, 1982

In 1914, in the year that Stephen Petric was born, in August, the Panama Canal opened to traffic. Begun by the French in the 1880's and abandoned, the United States undertook further construction in 1904. After 10 years, and the elimination of malaria carrying mosquitoes (which caused immense delays for the French and the Americans), the 48 mile long artificial waterway - a series of locks - created a shortcut for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

In 1926, at the age of only 12 years old, Stephen was alive when on November 15th, NBC was founded. It was the U.S.'s first major broadcast network. Ownership of the network was split between RCA (a majority partner at 50%), its founding corporate parent General Electric (which owned 30%), and Westinghouse (which owned the remaining 20%).
