    STEPHEN R TUMINSKI TURNER FALLS - Stephen R. Tuminski, 91, formerly of 80 High Street, died Friday (3-01-02) in the Poet's Seat Nursing Home in Greenfield. He was born in Montague, Mary 10, 1910, the son of Stephen and Mary (Zukowski) Tuminski. He attended Turners Falls High School and had been a lifelong resident of Turners Falls. Tuminski was employed by the former Strathmore Paper ompany for many years, retiring in 1975. He served in the Army with the 88th Infantry Division in the European-African Theater of War during World War II. He received the European-African Theater of War Campaign Ribbon with three Battle Stars. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in action and the Silver Star for gallantry. He attained the rank of technical sergeant. He was a member of the Blue Devils Association. He was a communicant of St. Mary's of Assumption Church. Tuminski was a member of the St. Stanislaus Society, the St. Kazimerz Socity, Turners Falls Rod & Gun Club and the Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid bowler and played semi-pro football for town teams from 1930 - 1941. His wife, the former Rita Sullivan, died in 1990. Survivors include two sons, Ronald S. Tuminski of Newtown Pennsylvania and Robert P. Tuminski of Vinalhaven, Maine; a sister, Josephine Muszynski of Turnes Falls; three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A Liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's of Assumption Church with the Rev. Stanley J. Askamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery. - The Recorder (Greenfield Massachusetts) Saturday, March 2, 2002 on page 12.

In 1937, by the time he was 27 years old, on May 6th, the German zeppelin the Hindenburg caught fire and blew up. The Hindenburg was a passenger ship traveling to Frankfurt Germany. It tried to dock in New Jersey, one of the stops, and something went wrong - it blew up. Thirty-six people were killed out of the 97 on board - 13 passengers, 22 crewmen, and one ground worker. The reasons for the explosion are still disputed.
