Steve Pete Killiany was born on August 15, 1924 in Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio, 44035, United States to parents Victor and Mary Killiany. He had older siblings Mike, Mary, Victor, and Anna as well as a younger sister Agnes Killiany. At the age of 18, he registered for the draft on December 11, 1942, in Elyria, Ohio. At the time of registration, he was employed by the Elyria Foundry Co. Steve then enlisted in the military on April 5, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was assigned the rank of Private and was classified as a "Selectee" - an enlisted man who was selected for military service through the draft system. He served in the Army as part of the Co B 526th ARMORED INFANTRY BN. and was in service for 3 years from April 12, 1943 until his discharge date of October 9, 1946.
