Stephen Stecko was white. He was born on March 27, 1917 to parents Roman Stecko and Stella C Umrysz. His mother Stella was born on October 28, 1892 in Austria and immigrated to the US sometime before 1916. She married Roman on June 17, 1916 in Manhattan, New York, USA. She later resided in Washington, Morris, New Jersey, USA and passed away in New Jersey on December 3, 1972. His father Roman was born on May 25, 1891 in Soroviccia, Austria and immigrated to the United States arriving in New York City on December 20, 1909. He gained naturalization on July 30, 1922 in NYC. He later resided in Washington, Morris, New Jersey, USA and passed away in Long Valley, Morris, New Jersey, USA on November 4, 1972.

Steve was born and raised in Long Valley and then moved to Budd Lake in 1947. Steve later moved to Byram in 1998 and lived there until his passing.

Steve was one of four children in his family with siblings John Stecko (1921-1999), Helen C Stecko (1929-2001), and Mary Stecko (1934-). At the time of his enlistment, he had completed one year of high school.

Steve Stecko enlisted into the US Army on February 18, 1941 in Newark New Jersey with Military serial#: 32060191. He was a Private First Class in the US Army and was a veteran of World War II. He served from February 18, 1941 until his discharge on January 15, 1946.

He worked as a locomotive engineer for the Lackawanna Railroad and Con-Rail. He was employed with them for 36 years before retiring in 1985.

Steve was married to Jessie Livingston (1918-2003).
