  • Introduction

    Stevie was a very dear friend of mine the majority of the time she and I went to school together in Wiggins, Colorado (1995-2000), teaching me from time to time what it takes to have a friend; at one point in fifth grade, Stevie and I were also rivals playing a math-based computer game, with me ultimately winning when the fifth grade game rivalry ended in February of 1996, and it was at this time that Stevie and I struck up this friendship. After I returned to Fort Morgan for school in January of 2000, Stevie and I stayed in touch whenever possible (calling or writing to each other whenever time allowed), but it wasn't the same as when Stevie and I saw each other pretty much every day in school. Then in July of 2000, I moved back to Fort Morgan, and it was then that I realized that I would never see or hear from Stevie again. Sadly, about a year later (June of 2001), I had returned home one afternoon after running errands and hadn't been home more than 15-20 minutes, when suddenly, the phone rang with the news that two nights earlier (June 25, 2001), Stevie had suffered fatal injuries in a car crash as she and a friend from school were returning back to Wiggins after a rodeo in Greeley, Colorado. Needless to say, when I got off the phone, I was sobbing and was inconsolable for some time, primarily the day in question when I received the news (June 27, 2001), the day before the funeral (June 28), and the day of the funeral (June 29, 2001), though my singing of a very stirring rendition of "Angels Among Us" moved everyone (or almost everyone) at the service to tears. There were also a few times where, during the funeral, all I personally could do was cry myself.

In 1991, the public was confused about the difference between HIV and AIDS (HIV is a virus that can lead to AIDS) and there was little treatment for either. Most thought that Johnson would die within a year or so. Also, the transmission of AIDS wasn't understood so he had to retire from basketball. Magic Johnson is still alive and well.
