Swan John Henric Challman 1846 - 1926

Swan John Challman was born in 1846 in Sweden to Lars Olaf Challman and Benedicta (Nyzren) Challman, and had a sister Hulda Albertina Theodora (Challman) Rasmus. He was in a relationship with Jane (Pike) Challman, and had children Hulda Benedicta (Challman) Merrillees, Ella Florence (Challman) Bunting, Henric Oscar Challman, Jennie Ingeborg Challman, Olga Dagmar Challman, and Ilma Challman) Holroyd. Swan Challman died at age 80 years old in 1926 in Elsternwick, Glen Eira City County, VIC Australia.

  • Introduction

    The Argus, Melbourne. 14th May 1877. .....MARRIAGES..... CHALLMAN.- PYKE. On the 5th Inst., at St. Peter's Church, by the Rev. H. H. P. Handfield, Henric, son of the late L. O. Challman, Lund, Sweden, to Jane, daughter of the late William Pyke, Camberwell, London. The Williamstown Chronicle. 13th December 1884. On Wednesday afternoon a mariner named John Swan Challman met with a serious accident on board the Stevedoring Company's steam launch Victorian. He was at the wheel of the vessel when the rudder chain became unmanageable, and the launch ran against the bowsprit of the schooner Maggie. Challman was knocked down, and his right arm broken near the shoulder, and sustained some serious injuries to the body and head. He was removed to his residence, Giffard-street, Williamstown, and attended by Dr. Figg.

In 1846, in the year that Swan John Henric Challman was born, on November 4th, the Donner Party was stranded in the Sierra Nevada on its way to California. The ill-fated wagon train was snowed in and couldn't get out of the mountains for 3 months. Some went for help - on foot - but the majority of the 87 people in the wagon train were stuck in heavy snow, without food. Only 48 of the original settlers survived - some by cannibalism of the dead.

In 1865, at the age of 19 years old, Swan was alive when on April 9th, Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union Army at Appomattox Court House. Lee's surrender led to a series of surrenders in the Confederacy and in 1866 President Johnson issued a "Proclamation—Declaring that Peace, Order, Tranquility, and Civil Authority Now Exists in and Throughout the Whole of the United States of America".
