Abraham Thomas Swanton 1884 - 1952

Abraham Thomas Swanton of Nunawading, VIC Australia was born on July 18, 1884 in Werribee, City of Wyndham County to Helena Jane (Beamish) Swanton and Samuel Swanton. Abraham Swanton had siblings George Beamish Swanton, John Swanton, Henry Swanton, Ann Swanton Green, Freda Jane Swanton, Thomas Swanton, Margaret Swanton, William Swanton, and Adelaide Victoria Swanton. He married Mary Grey (Forster) Swanton in 1912. They had children Jean Swanton, Rhoda Irene Swanton, Annie Swanton, and Elsie Swanton. He would also marry Minnie Maude Jessie Morton in 1938. Abraham Swanton died at age 67 years old in April 1952 in Nunawading.

In 1884, in the year that Abraham Thomas Swanton was born, on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
