He grew up in a large family with siblings Serbina Tarasi (1905-1977), Sarah Tarasi (1905-1977), Fortuna Adeline Tarasi (1907-1991), Louis Augustus Tarasi (1908-1997), Albert Creamond Tarasi (1912-1991), Virginia Tarasi (1914-1994), Esther Mary Tarasi (1915-2007), Lylvia Tarsi (1918-), and Eugene G Tarasi (1921-1968).
He grew up in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania and was a graduate of a Catholic High School. Sylvan went on to attend a Radio Engineering School in Chicago, IL.

He served in the US Army from March 14, 1942 until his discharge on October 18, 1945. most of which was spent overseas as a radio technician.

Miss Shirley M. Ferrick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley A. Ferrick, of 1347 Spruce street, and Sylvan E. Tarasi, son of Mrs, Sadie Tarasi, of 420 South Fourteenth street, were married Saturday, June 7, in St. Stephen, church, Shamokin. The double ring ceremony was performed by the Rev. Cassian Zembrzucki.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white satin trimmed with rosepoint lace. The same lace was used on the finger tip veil, and she carried a bouquet of calla lilies. Miss Isabelle Toth of Pittsburgh, the maid of honor, wore yellow, made with gold brocaded top; and the bridesmaid, Miss Florence Sienda, of this city, chose pale green mouseline de soie. They carried old fashioned bouquets.
Eugene Francaville and Louis Magaro, of this city, were best man and usher, and the wedding music was presented by Mrs. Jean Broscious and Mrs. Josephine Grypp, vocalists, accompanied by Miss Mildred Mroz, organist.
After a wedding trip to Virginia and Virginia Beach, Mr. Tarasi and his bride will go to Chicago where they will live. Mr. Tarasi will attend a Radio Engineering School there.
Mrs. Tarasi was formerly employed by the J. E. Shank & Son Company of Penbrook. Mr. Tarasi, a graduate of Catholic High School, served in the Army four years, most of which was spent overseas as a radio technician.
