    Sylvester J Zdziarski was born on November 5th, 1914 in Ambridge Pennsylvania to Alexander Zdziarski and Stell Czarnocki. He was survived by five brothers and sisters. On his October 1940 World War II draft card, Sylvester described himself as being five feet two and 3/4 inches tall and as weighing 120 pounds. He had blue eyes, black hair, and a "light" complexion. Sylvester Zdziarski married Margaret Nemeth, born in 1922, on May 19th, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan and they had two sons, Gerard (1951 - 2020) and Mark. Also leaves two grandchildren, Jonathan and Jessica and five brothers and sisters. Funeral services from the Martenson Funeral Home, 1725 Lawndale Avenue, Detroit, Wednesday 9:30 a.m. to St. Gabriel Catholic Church at 10. - Detroit Free Press (Detroit, Michigan) Tuesday, March 6, 1990 on page 12.

In 1944, when he was 30 years old, on June 6th, the largest amphibious invasion in history was launched - the Normandy landing (called D-Day). Soldiers from the United States, Britain, Canada, and the Free French landed on Normandy Beach and were later joined by Poland, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece, and the Netherlands. Almost 5,000 landing and assault craft, 289 escort vessels, and 277 minesweepers were involved. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on D-Day - Allied casualties on the first day were at least 10,000. 4,414 were confirmed dead.
