Sylvester enlisted in the military on September 14, 1942, in Chicago. He joined the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA, as a Private in the Selectees (enlisted men) component. After serving for more than three years, Sylvester Wisinski was honorably discharged from the military on December 21, 1945. He married Marion Ruby Lembcke (1925–2000) on August 30, 1947 in Cook County, Illinois and worked in a machine shop. Sylvester Joseph Wisinski passed away in December 9, 1997 at the age of 76 at the Hemet Valley Medical Center 1117 E Devonshire Ave, in Hemet, Riverside County, California.

In 1920, in the year that Sylvester Joseph Wisinski was born, Italian born factory worker Nicola Sacco and fish peddler Bartolomeo Vanzetti were picked up by police on May 5th in connection with the April 15th murder and robbery of a guard and a paymaster at the Slater and Morrill Shoe Company in South Braintree, Mass. Although in later years they were thought to be innocent, they were anarchists and were convicted of the crime and put to death.

In 1938, when he was 18 years old, on October 30th, a Sunday, The Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcast Orson Welles' special Halloween show The War of the World's. A clever take on H.G. Wells' novel, the show began with simulated "breaking news" of an invasion by Martians. Because of the realistic nature of the "news," there was a public outcry the next day, calling for regulation by the FCC. Although the current story is that many were fooled and panicked, in reality very few people were fooled. But the show made Orson Welles' career.
