Tammy had four siblings, though her only brother died when she was two, going on three years old. According to a podcast titled “The Unsolved Mysteries Podcast” (Episode 43), Tammy and her siblings were split between different foster care homes when their mother lost custody of them. Tammy and her youngest sister, Carla, were in the same home together. Carla described her older sister as a happy child. However, Tammy grew troubled as a teenager. She struggled with school due to learning disabilities, and drank liquor with her friends. She also began to runaway, and was subsequently sent to a group home by her foster parents in Roswell, New Mexico, in an attempt to turn her life around. The sisters lost contact, though Carla did try to call Tammy around 1981 to alert her of an aunt’s death. Staff at the group home said that they had nobody on their records by Tammy’s name, and then admitted she had gone missing around seven months prior. On September 28, 1980, Tammy and another girl from the home were permitted to attend the Roswell State Fair alongside other teens from the group home. However, when staff members later collected the other kids, Tammy was gone. Her own aunt and uncle reportedly spotted her at a Denny’s diner in the same area that night, in the company of an unidentified woman and man. Tammy exclaimed that they were going to California, despite her aunt’s protest. A few days later, on October 5th, the nude body of a female was found in Henderson, Nevada, around Arroyo Grande Road. The decedent had been beaten, stabbed, and likely sexually assaulted. Part of a shower curtain was near her body, and it appeared she had been washed before she was left on the roadside. Tammy’s sister described her as naive, and too trusting. Counselors from the group home said the girl was sweet, but very shy and quiet. After Carla learned of her sister’s unknown whereabouts, she spent years searching for Tammy, until investigators contacted her and DNA samples were taken from her and another sister, where they finally identified “Arroyo Grande Jane Doe” as Tammy Corrine Terrell.
