Tammy was born to a mother who’d already had a child from a previous relationship, and her father was not in her life. As she grew older, she was known to run away due to a turbulent home life. Once, she ran off with a friend before they phoned home with wishes to return. Her friend’s mother paid for tickets for both girls to return home, as Tammy’s mother refused to help. Tammy’s sister Pamela described their mother as abusive and unstable, and said that she had moved in with her grandmother to get away from the home. Around 1979, Tammy ran away once more, hitchhiking all the way to New York from her homestate of Florida.
