Temperance Tempe (Morgan) Walser was born in 1844 in Wabash County, Illinois United States to John Calvin Morgan and Nancy Ann (Gupton) Morgan. She married Charles Daniel Walser in 1870, and had children Luella Walser, Franklin Walser, Charles C Walser, Hattie Serelda (Walser) Huffman, Flora Walser, and Belle (Walser) Schwarzlose. Temperance Walser died at age 88 years old on February 4, 1933 in West Salem, Edwards County.

In 1844, in the year that Temperance Tempe Walser was born, in June and July, the "Great Flood of 1844" occurred on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers - the largest flood recorded in that area. The population in the area was sparse at the time, though, so the flood didn't have a lot of economic impact. The biggest loss was to the Wyandot Indians - 100 people died from diseases caused by the flood.

In 1864, by the time she was 20 years old, on February 25th, the first prisoners arrived at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Andersonville became notorious for the conditions that Union prisoners endured. 500 prisoners had left from Richmond, Virginia the week before - eventually 13,000 prisoners would die at the prison.
