Terry was born In Korce, Albania. His parents were Albanian. The family had a compound last name: Pando Stamo. When he immigrated, he adopted Pando as his last name, following the example of his brothers. In later years his brothers reverted to the last name of Stamo. Terry Pando was established and married, so remained Sotirios Pando -- Terry Pando.

Terry's father died when Terry was five years old. His older brothers emigrated to the U. S. before 1920, with Terry and his two sisters following a few years later. Terry's mother emigrated to the U.S. in 1939.

In Albania, education was provided by religious institutions, either Christian or Muslim. Terry was educated in the Christian "Greek School," taught largely in Greek. He was fluent in Greek and Albanian, plus he picked up a little French from French troops stationed in Albania during World War I.

Terry was not particularly religious. He was skeptical about the religious and economic honesty of leadership -- Orthodox Catholic, Roman Catholic and Protestant.

Eastern European actions during World War I probably pushed him to move to the United States after the war. His age and family status protected him from military obligations in World War II.

Terry worked in food service and random other jobs. He moved from the Northeast to Texas where he bought a partnership interest in a hat-cleaning business.

He worked six days a week in his hat shop -- seven days during the fall season. Off-season, he enjoyed yardwork, and was proud of his accomplishments in house maintenance.
