  • Introduction

    Thekla married James Bledsoe Lea in 1888. They lived in Kentucky and then Arkansas. The couple had one child, Roland A Lea, who was my Grandfather. Roland A Lea married Elsa Ehmann and they had one child, Roland E Lea, who was my Father. After Thekla's husband died she made two trips back to Germany to visit.

In 1871, by the time she was only 15 years old, on October 8th, 4 major fires started on the shores of Lake Michigan - in Chicago (Illinois), Peshtigo (Wisconsin), Holland (Michigan) and Manistee (Michigan). The Chicago fire is the most well known of them because it left almost 100,000 people homeless. But the Peshtigo Fire killed around 2,500 people. The casualty count made it the deadliest fire in US history.
