The day she named my little brother
I remember when my brother Chris was born my parents tried to name him Alfred. I thought it was the ugliest name in the whole world and I was just ..horrified with the idea.

I went on this huge "anti Alfred as a name" campaign and even got John and Celeste involved. Though I doubt they understood what was really going on cause they were so little. I just had John stand there and say "no no no"

Lol! Anyways, my parents finally caved and agreed to not name him Alfred. So for like 3 weeks after he was born we just called him "baby". In Mexico, at least in the 1980's and as Americans- they didn't have to do the whole birth certificate name thing right away at the hospital.

I remember very clearly one day my Mom was napping with the baby and she jumps up all excited and says " I've got it! I'll name him after my sister! So his name is Chris! Not Christopher! You understand Heidi? His name is not Christopher it's just Chris. After my sister. " and then she runs out of the room to go find my Dad to tell him.

It's weird how different my parents were back then. I'm probably the only one old enough to actually have any memories of a time when they liked each other. Because they definitely did.

For a little while. Until I was about 8 and then they started to change.

I've never seen Chris's birth certificate so I don't know if my Dad decided to put Christopher instead of Chris as his official name. But I know for a fact that the name my Mom chose for him was most definitely Chris. And I know without a doubt that she named Chris after her sister.

I'm the only person who was in the room with her that day to hear her say it but it was a very big deal to me at the time because I'd been so invested in what they were going to name him. It's stuck with me and is a memory I've thought of a lot throughout my life because there are so few times my Mom ever allowed this part of herself to show. My Mom cares A LOT more then she lets people see.

I don't know if she ever told Aunt Chris that she named her baby after her. I don’t know if she ever told anyone other then me. So, I wanted to tell this story so that it is on record somewhere.

I worked very hard to not say anything about this because I'm not trying to be starting drama. But at my brothers funeral those people had listed his name as Christopher Timothy Carroll everywhere and I don't know why but it really really really bothered me. It's not his name. It's never been his name. I'm just the only witness to this fact because my parents are too old to remember details now and my brothers and sisters were too young.
