Introduction

I loved going boating with Grandpa! He would drive the boat to Dockside and visit with us in Chesapeake City MD. I remember him always carving the turkey on Thanksgiving with his electric knife. I remember him taking me to the Legion and counting money....he gave me a cup and said whatever falls on the floor you get to keep...I had a full cup of coins when we left :) my Grandma (Esther) made me buy socks when all I wanted was the plastic pink heels and crown...when we got home Grandpa bought those shoes for me...I sure do miss his handsome face..love you Grandpa!

In 1928, in the year that Thomas Alexander was born, aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
