In 1857, by the time he was 21 years old, on March 4th, James Buchanan became the 15th President of the United States. Called a "doughface" by many - a Northerner with Southern sympathies - he said that he would only serve one term and he did what he said.

In 1897, by the time he was 61 years old, on March 4th, William McKinley became the 25th President of the United States. He had beaten William Jennings Bryan in the 1896 election by 51% to 46.7% in the popular vote. Six months into his second term as President, McKinley was assassinated.

In 1912, in the year of Thomas Flannagin's passing, Arizona was admitted to the United States in February (on Valentine's Day). It became the 48th state in the Union.
