In 1817, in the year that Thomas James Duffy Buckley was born, on June 12th, German inventor Karl Drais created and rode a dandy horse - also called a "Draisine" or "Laufmaschine". It was the earliest form of a bicycle and had no pedals - the dandy horse was wooden and ridden by running or walking while sitting on the bike.

It affected Great Britain most strongly, leading to the closing of six banks in London and 60 banks in the country. Scottish adventurer - and trickster - Gregor MacGregor had invented a fictional Latin American country called Poyais and persuaded others to invest in the "country". The loss of funds on the part of banks and others began the panic.
