  • Introduction

    Birth: 3520, Marr: (2)#24892, Death: #29051. Divorced Catherine soon after WW2. Thomas John served in the Army during WW2 with the 2/1 Battalion and was a POW in Europe. He was awarded the Special 25th Anniversary Medallion in 1966 from the Govt of Crete. Rank WO2, Serv #NX7848. NOK listed as M. Fenton, this was probably Catherine, as her middle initial was M. Written by grandson: Granddad was wounded and captured in Greece while serving with the 2/1st Battalion of the Australian Army in 1941. He spent the rest of World War II as a POW and, after his escape, as a fighter with the Greek resistance. He would go on to serve as an Australian diplomat in Athens during the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1911, in the year that Thomas John Fenton was born, British physicist Ernest Rutherford (born in New Zealand), along with German physicist Hans Geiger, discovered the structure of an atom. He found that atoms had nuclei (a nucleus) and were circled by electrons, much as planets orbit the sun.

In 1925, by the time he was just 14 years old, in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.
