Thomas Michael Carrolan of Ouyen, Mildura Rural City County, VIC Australia was born in 1861 in Taradale to John Carolin and Ann Carolin Carolin. He had siblings Joseph Carolin and Francis Joseph Carolin. He married Catherine Maria Healey on January 9, 1899 at St Alipius Parish 84 Victoria Street, in Ballarat East, City of Ballarat County, Victoria, and had children Margaret Ann Carrolan, Mary Veronica Carrolan, Catherine Carrolan, Annie Carrolan, John James Carrolan, Catherine Carrolan, and Frances Josephine Carrolan. Thomas Carrolan died at age 78 years old on May 13, 1940 in Ouyen, Mildura Rural City County, VIC.

In 1890, when he was 29 years old, on December 29th, the Wounded Knee Massacre occurred in South Dakota on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation . The U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment said that they rode into the Lakota camp "trying to disarm" the inhabitants. One person, Black Coyote - who was deaf - held onto his rifle, saying that he paid a lot of money for it. Shots rang out and by the end at least 153 Lakota Sioux - some estimates say 300 - and 25 troops had died. The site of the massacre is a National Historic Landmark.
