DEATH OF CORPL. MAIR The toll which war exacts from those who are called to take an active partFix this text in its operations was brought vividly home to another Ipswich family last night, when the Mayor (Ald. P. W. Cameron) had the sad task of brcak- ing the news of a casualty to an anxi- ous mother and family. Corpl. T. N. Mair enlisted for service with the A.I.F. in August, 1914, being amongst the first of Australia's brave sons to hear the call of duty. And now, after three years and three months service with the Anzacs, he has been called to answer a higher call, having succumbed to an attack of peritonitis in France. Corpl. Mair is a son of Mrs. J. Mair, of Harlin- road, and it was to her that the Mayor was called upon to convey the news of the supreme sacrifice which one of her soldier sons had made whilst playing his part in the role of a soldier of the King. The deceased left Australia with one of the early transports, was present on the deserts of Egypt participating in those many months of training, which was the por- tion of our first contingents, and played a part in tle Gallipoli cam- paign. He was wounded on the Penin- sula, but was subsequently able to again rejoin the A.I.F., and took part in some of the engagements in which the Anzacs figured so prominently in France, where he was again wounded. Corpl. Mair enlisted from New South Wales, with his brother, Scrgt. W. H. Mair, who has since been returned in- valided to his native land. Prior to going to the Southern State, Corpl. Mair was a member of the Queens- land Police Force, his commanding stature being a well-known figure, par- ticularly in the northern parts of the State, notably at Hughenden. He was familiarly known throughout the north as "Catchem." Three members of this family have worn the uniform of the A.I.F.
