Thomas Richard Buffham of Gymbowen, West Wimmera Shire County, VIC Australia was born in 1859 in Coleraine, Southern Grampians Shire County to Thomas Buffham and Johanna Power Buffham. He had siblings Sarah Ann (Buffham) Cruse, Keeran Buffham, John Perrin Buffham, and Eliza Buffham Maloney. He married Julia Ann (Mills) Buffham, and had children Johanna Teresa Buffham, William Andrew Buffham, John Augustine Buffham, Thomas Joseph Buffham, May Mary Buffham, Florence Ann (Buffham) Williams, David Peter Buffham, and Joseph Buffham. Thomas Buffham died at age 77 years old on December 23, 1937 in Horsham, Horsham Rural City County.

In 1859, in the year that Thomas Richard Buffham was born, on February 27th, US Congressman Daniel Sickles shot and killed Philip Barton Key - a US. District Attorney and son of Francis Scott Key, writer of the national anthem, for having an affair with his wife. Sickles claimed temporary insanity - the first to do so - and was acquitted.
