Tom Robinson Lydster was born on March 10, 1886 in Sydney, NSW Australia to Sarah Ann (Robinson) Lydster and Thomas Lydster, and had siblings William Lydster and Rachael (Lydster) Barnett. He married Ruth (Conning) Lydster. He also married Lillian Harriet (Dawson) Lydster, and they had a child Rose Lillian (Lydster) Rand. Tom Lydster died at age 97 years old on March 4, 1984 in Malvern, City of Stonnington County, VIC, and was buried St.Kilda Cemetery - Cremated at Springvale Crematorium..

In 1886, in the year that Thomas Robinson Lydster was born, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.

In 1914, when he was 28 years old, in August, the Panama Canal opened to traffic. Begun by the French in the 1880's and abandoned, the United States undertook further construction in 1904. After 10 years, and the elimination of malaria carrying mosquitoes (which caused immense delays for the French and the Americans), the 48 mile long artificial waterway - a series of locks - created a shortcut for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
