  • Introduction

    The Age, Melbourne. 3rd January 1889. FALL OF EARTH IN A MINE. BALLARAT, Wednesday. A young man named Thomas Sprague, aged 28 years, a resident of Ford-street, met with a painful accident this morning while at work in the mine of the Brittannia United Company, Ballarat East. He was at work in the face when about 6 cwt. of earth broke away and entombed him. A number of workmen dug Sprague out without much delay, when it was found that his back was injured. He was conveyed to hospital, where the surgeons pronounced the case to be very serious, and held out no hope of recovery. Sprague was the sole support of his mother and the younger members of her family.

    The Ballarat Star. 13th August 1894. Many will regret to learn of the death of Mr. Thomas Sprague, of Ford street, Ballarat East, Deceased who was 34 years of age, met with an accident nearly six years ago while working in a tribute party in the Britannia United mine, his spine being fractured. Paralysis supervened, and Death occurred on Saturday. The deceased, who was highly respected, was a brother of Mr. E. Sprague, operator in the Telegraph office at Ballarat West. He was unmarried .
