Shaffer, Rosilla Catherine Shaffer, Virginia Elizabeth Shaffer, Marcus Lafayette Shaffer, Andrew Johnson Shaffer, Nancy Alice Shaffer, Dioclesian Martin Shaffer, Cynthia Florence Shaffer, Minnie Galena Shaffer, and James Hayes Shaffer. He was in a relationship with Cora M. Phillips, and had a child Ralph DeWitt Shaffer. Thomas Shaffer died at age 76 years old on April 23, 1949 in Kanawha County.

In 1873, in the year that Thomas Stanton Shaffer was born, on March 3rd, the U.S. Congress enacted the Comstock Law. The law made it illegal to send any "obscene, lewd, or lascivious" material through the U.S. mail. This included erotica, contraceptives, sex toys, abortifacients, information about these items, and "personal letters alluding to any sexual content or information".

In 1886, by the time he was only 13 years old, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
