  • Introduction

Thomas William Hildebrand. (Ch) 236712, Able Seaman. Thomas was born on 5th September 1890 in Teignmouth, Devon (I find it amusing his birthday 5th, mine 6th and Grandfather Bieri 7th) He was 5'7" tall with brown hair and grey eyes. He joined the Navy on 5th September 1908 for 12 years aged 18, but had already served since 9th June 1906 as a Boy 2nd Class. His training commenced at HMS Ganges shore based establishment until 25th February 1907. His first ship posting after training was aboard HMS Vindictive for 3 months, ending on 25th April 1907, still as a Boy 1st Class. He then had postings and experience on the following ships - HMS Charybdis, Sutlej and Albemarle (spending 7 days in cells on the Albemarle sometime in 1908 or 1909) He left the Albemarle on 7th February 1910 and went to Pembroke I for more training, now as an Ordinary Seaman and advanced to Able Seaman while on HMS Caesar between 26th February 1910 and 6th June 1910. He spent nearly 2 and a half years on HMS Dominion, being recorded there during the 1911 census, aboard the Battleship in Glengariff Harbour, Scotland. He was there until October 1912. After another 6 months training at Pembroke I to the 27th March 1913, he was posted to HMS Lord Nelson on 28th March 1913 until 16th September 1913 with his character being recorded as Very Good throughout. There is a note after this last posting however, of the word RUN. Remarks on his file state:- "A man giving his name of Thos.W.Hildebrand was arrested on 16th April 1915 and committed to confinement at Brixton as a deserter from the Lord Nelson. His description however corresponds with that of Thos.F.King, Stk 1 Class, a deserter from the 'Iron Duke'. (Man(?) therefore sent to R.N Barracks, Chatham for identification". SUBNOTE - "The man committed to confinement at Brixton identified as (?) sentenced to 40 days (?) for desertion". The bottom of the record is too damaged to read. Comparing Thomas W Hildebrand's service records to Thomas Frederick King's, we can conclude the deserter was probably Thomas King. There are no further Navy entries on his record after he "ran" on 23rd March 1914. The two men would have also been compared, finding that Thomas King had many tattoos and Thomas Hildebrand had none. There is, following this episode, an 18 month gap in Thomas Hildebrand's service record. After leaving Pembroke I in June 1915, he was posted to HMS Sir John Moore on 1st July 1915 with 'fair' character recorded. HMS Barritz was his last ship in 1916 before being posted to the Vanguard on 31st December 1916, until her explosion. (#141 - 388/843)
