In 1959, in the year that Timothy S Nitka was born, on August 8th, Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States. The US flag was changed to show 50 stars.

In 1960, when he was merely 1 year old, on May 1st, an American CIA U-2 spy plane, piloted by Francis Gary Powers, was shot down by a surface-to-air missile over the Soviet Union. Powers ejected and survived but was captured. The U.S. claimed that the U-2 was a "weather plane" but Powers was convicted in the Soviet Union of espionage. He was released in 1962 after 1 year, 9 months and 10 days in prison.

In 1973, when he was just 14 years old, on January 28th, the Paris Peace Accord was signed - supposedly ending the Vietnam War. Hostilities continued between North and South Vietnam and the U.S. continued to bomb. But by August 15, 1973, 95% of American troops had left Vietnam. The war ended in 1975 with the fall of Saigon.

In 1983, at the age of 24 years old, Timothy was alive when "crack" cocaine was developed in the Bahamas and spread to the United States. It was also cheaper, making it more easily available to low income neighborhoods.

In 1993, in the year of Timothy S Nitka's passing, on February 26th, a truck bomb exploded in the garage under the North Tower of the World Trade Center. While the bomb didn't do what was planned (collapse the North Tower into the South Tower), it did kill six people and injured thousands of people.
