Thomas Lamar Swift of Saint Simons Island, Glynn County, Georgia was born on September 26, 1949 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Fulton County to Frank Swift and Hattie Swift. He married Kathy Swift on May 11, 1986 in Savannah, Chatham County, and had children Katie Swift and Maggie Swift. Thomas Swift died at age 60 years old on January 25, 2010 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Glynn County, and was buried at Christ church in St. Simons island.

    Thomas was Caucasian, as well as his parents. Thomas’s father was Frank Meador Swift, originally born in New York City, but called Atlanta his home. Thomas’s mother is as Harriet (known to everyone as Hattie) Margaret Simpson, and after marrying Frank, she became Harriet S. Swift. She was originally the daughter of a prestigious doctor in Charleston, SC, where she was born and raised. Frank had a brother, Walter Swift who was married to Emily Swift, spending their married life as residents of St. Simons Island, GA. Thomas also had a brother, Frank Swift II, who preceded Thomas in a tragic death.

    Thomas was born in raised in the area of Atlanta known as Buckhead, off of Habersham Road. Thomas was a student at The Lovett School before spending his later education years at Darlington, a prestigious boarding school in Rome, Georgia. This boarding school allowed Thomas to excel and follow in his father’s foot steps to gain admission to the University of Georgia, the alma mater of his father and brother. Thomas went on to pledge the fraternity KA, unlike his father who was the president of the SAE fraternity and the Chi Phi fraternity that his brother Frank pledged

    Thomas attended the Lovett School I’m Atlanta, Georgia and gained his high school diploma from the prestigious boarding school, Darlington. At the age of 16, Thomas continued his education at the University of Georgia but completed his Bachelors in history at West Georgia. Following in his fathers legacy, Thomas went on to the exceptional school of Emory Law, where he gained his law degree and passed the Georgia bar.

    Thomas was born into an Episcopalian faith but was not considered a religious person based on his attendance at church. He preferred a personal relationship with God and always blessed the food before eating and said his prayers before bed.

    Thomas did a small stint in the Marine Cor between his time at the university of Georgia and enrolling at West Georgia. Thomas only served the minimum term and did not see any combat.

  • Personal Life & Family

    Thomas met his wife, Kathy Ryle of Savannah, GA in Atlanta. They remained married until his death for a total of 24 years. They were married on May 11, 1986 in a cathedral in downtown Savannah. They had two daughters together. The first being Kathryn Elizabeth Swift (known as Katie), born March 14, 1989, and four and a half years later, on June 17, 1993, their second daughter, Margaret Lamar Swift (known as Maggie) was born. Kathryn was 20 and Margaret 16, at the time of their father’s passing. Thomas’s wife, Kathryn (known as Kathy), was 51 upon Thomas’s death.
