MY EXPERIENCE AS INDUSTRIAL TRAINING STUDENT
(A case study of Nigerian Shipper’s Council Apapa Lagos)
Life itself is a lesson the more you live the more you learn and the great philosophers said that knowledge is paramount and paramount is power. My names are Master Ugonna Kingsely Ijeaku from Okwu Emekuku Owerri Imo State. I am the second son of the family of four with three boys and a little sister. I was linked to the above case study by my aunty Chief Mrs. Ego Ijeaku who happened to be my uncle’s wife, who is a staff at the above Government institution establish to protect the interest of Nigerian shippers.
My appointment letter was approved by the director finance and administration through the deputy director training Miss Ezedinma on the 15th of December 2012 after my four months fruitless search all around Lagos. Due to some certain circumstances like inexperience and amateur behaviour that a young Nigerian student applies in life I decided to travel to the village for the Christmas celebration and on my returning become my resumption. I started work at Nigerian Shippers Council on the 7th January 2013 at the department of Corporate Planning and Budget under the unit of Planning and Budget with Mr. G Onojedo as the head of the unit.
It was fun working in the midst of educated men and woman from all the tribe in Nigeria and i really enjoyed my first two weeks in the organization but things change when i was introduce fully into the nuns and cracks of the unit and that was when i understand that the knowledge of Solomon was not just a gift but also a blessing. I was able to apply all that i was taught in statistics in practice. But the challenges was tough because i have to feed myself from the ten thousand naira been pay to the student under the same programme that I saw myself in.
Sometime i have to miss work because of the transport and feeding money is not available. But may God bless my aunty Mrs. Ego Ijeaku who supported me with all the financial helps a man can give to his neighbour. Coming with staff bus is a very interesting thing that can happened to any man who is opportune to be doing industrial training but any time the bus is not working “oh ma good God” is very hard for me to come all the way from Mushin to apapa due to the allowance given to us per month cannot be enough to feed in Apapa because it is a government residential area but we still manage. The only thing i never liked is the place i stayed for my industrial training because my brother that i am staying with live a kind of life that a young man don’t need to imitate so as not to make mistakes in like and how he used to shout at me whenever he is with a woman makes me uncomfortable liven in his apartment. Sometime i have to stay outside for up to seven hour because he is with one of his concubines making me a homeless young man and it make me to remember the books I read in Macmillan primary English course about Agbo leaving in Calabar and an unpublished article by Atubi Uzochi .S. “my first visit to Abuja “
Writing this note is to let other Nigerian students who will eventually be going for industrial training to know that whatever they may witness has already been witness by other people in different and respective class and stanzas.
My most challenged in the months i stayed in Lagos was hunger because those of us that are been brought up from the family of an average Nigerians knows that there is some things a man do for himself so i decide that i must save at least three thousand naira per month to make sure that i can be able to buy my higher national diploma form and pay my acceptance fee when the time come which i believe will eventually approach and i am very grateful to God Almighty who has given me the tactics to stay without food and still remain healthy, because man does not live by bread alone said the scripture.
Sometime ago I made up my mind to go back to my father’s home in Owerri but the other mind will be asking me if my father will have to keep on given me food at this age in life, so i decide to take it as what life has for me and to be sincere i have learnt my lessons.
I want to use this medium to say that any Nigerian student that misses industrial training is lacking the ingredients in education in Nigeria. I am a leaving witness. What kept me going was the slogan we used to recite in school “ALUTA CONTINUA VICTORIA ACERTA” and truly victorious was mine when i witnessed industrial attachment.
Thanking all that make my training successful may not be enough but I will be happy to say a Big thanks to you all starting from the ES Nigerian shippers council in the person of Mr. Hassan Bello and the director of corporate planning and research in respect of Mr. G B Ihuoma and all the staffs that i worked under in planning and budget unit. Mr Onojedo G, Mr. Izah Ogor, Mr. Isa Audu, Mrs. Ugwu Ndidi, Mrs. Folarin, Mr. Chris Ojiegbe, Mr. Abubakar Nayaya, Mr. Yakubu muktar, Mr. kola wale and most especially my mummy in the unit Mrs Helen Ayorinde may God bless you all for me. Am greatful.
