Velda Benningfield was a beautiful woman inside and out. She was one of seven children born to Ida Jane and Franklin Watkins. She was born in Mississippi and spent a good part of her childhood there. around the age of 12 her family moved to southern Maryland, the Brookmont area, where her father worked building houses. Velda married Roy Benningfield June 18, 1927.
They had four Children Velda Lee Benningfield, 1928, Pauline Benningfield, 1929, Ida Ruth Benningfield, 1930, and Franklin Mitchell Benningfield, 1932.
Velda and Roy raised their family in Baltimore Maryland and moved south to Georgia and finally Florida upon Roy's retirement from the Post Office.
In the mid 1960's Roy and Velda bought some land and built a home in Jamieson Florida. Velda worked at FSU for a number of years as a secretary.
Both Velda and Roy attended and were active in Salem United Methodist Church in Havana. They lived the rest of their lives in the house Roy built in Jamieson Florida.
