  • Obituary

VERNE CALLISON Amateur golfer SACRAMENTO - Verne Callison, a larger-than-life character who compiled one of the most distinguished records of any amateur golfer in California history, died Wednesday afternoon in Sacramento following a long battle with cancer. He was 74. Callison learned the game while growing up in Sacramento, where he worked as a caddie at Del Paso Country Club in the 1920s. Despite not having anything near a textbook golf swing, Callison won every tournament worth winning in California on the strength of a brilliant short game and and the nerve of a natural hustler. He won the State Fair Championship a record seven times, beating Al Geiberger to the title in 1958. Callison won the San Francisco City Amateur in 1960, defeating another future PGA Tour star, George Archer, on the 19th hole after tying on the 18th. But his most lasting accomplishment came in twice claiming the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. He won in 1960 at match play and in 1967 at stroke play, making him the only man to win the prestigious title under both formats. - The Modesto Bee (Modesto, California) Saturday, March 27, 1993 on page 53.
