    Vernise (also sometimes spelled Vernice) was born to John R. and Hattie B (Baxley) Cribb and she was married to James Owens who passed before her. She and James had three sons Gerald, Gregg and George, and four daughters Betty, Arden, Patricia and Gracie. According to the 1940s Census she was 26 and James was 28 and they lived with their son Johnnie age 5, and daughters Betty Lucile age 3, and Patricia Anne age 1 in Carvers Bay Georgetown South Carolina. A copy of her obituary is below.

    The following appeared in The Sun News in Myrtle Beach South Carolina on Sunday February 9th, 1997: HEMINGWAY -- Vernise Cribb Owens, 81, died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, at a Georgetown hospital after an illness. She was born in Hemingway, a daughter of the late John and Hattie Baxley Cribb. She was the widow of James Owens. Mrs. Owens was a homemaker and attended Union High School. She was a member of Owens Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was the secretary and treasurer of the church, a member of the ladies auxiliary and a former pianist. Survivors include three sons, Gerald Owens, Gregg Owens and George Owens, all of Hemingway; four daughters, Betty Lewellen of McColl, Arden Evans of Walterboro, and Patricia Amick and Gracie Birchmore, both of Lexington; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 7-9 tonight at Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Owens Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in Union United Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Owens Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 14387 Pleasant Hill Dr., Hemingway 29554.
