    Vernon E Haines was born on November 30th, 1902 in Ohio. His father was Edward L. Haines (1882 - 1954) and his mother was Bessie (Vandegrift) Haines (1883 - 1974). He had two sisters, Elleanor and Betty, and one brother, Irving. He also had two half-sisters. Vernon Haines married Catherine Arissa Jewell and they had four children: two daughters, Beverly (1935 - 2006) and Marybeth; and two sons, including Charles Edward (1946 - 2016) and Thomas V. On his February 14, 1942 World War II draft card, Vernon described himself as being 39 years old, five feet nine and 1/2 inches tall, and 192 pounds. He had brown eyes, brown hair, and a "ruddy" complexion. He was survived by eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In 1902, in the year that Vernon E Haines was born, the Aswan Low Dam (the old Aswan Dam) began construction in Egypt in 1899 and was completed in 1902 - making it the largest masonry dam in the world at the time. The dam was built on the Nile River in order to conserve water and regulate flooding, allowing for population increase along the Nile.

In 1926, at the age of 24 years old, Vernon was alive when on October 31st, Harry Houdini died in Michigan. Houdini was the most famed magician of his time and perhaps of all time, especially for his acts involving escapes - from handcuffs, straitjackets, chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers, and more. He was president of the Society of American Magicians and stringently upheld professional ethics. He died of complications from a ruptured appendix. Although he had received a blow to the area a couple of days previously, the connection between the blow and his appendicitis is disputed.
