Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Vernon Everett Pogue passed away on Friday, May 12, surrounded by family. He was the eldest child of Everett and Beulah (Roberts) Pogue. Born on Oct. 22, 1931, in the Town of Scott in Columbia County, Vern grew up on various area farms, and graduated from Marshall High School in 1951. There, he met the love of his life, Delores Scheel. They were married on Oct. 17, 1953. Shortly afterward, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served for two years as a mechanic in Okinawa near the end of the Korean War. He honed his skills there, and after returning home, he studied and became a mechanic. He worked for Wright Chevrolet in Columbus, before moving on to Gehler Stokes, Hult, and finally Thorstad Chevrolet in Madison. He retired in 1996 after 45 years of working on Chevrolets. He attained ASE Master Technician status. After retiring, he helped his sister Ione and family with field work on their farm in Oregon. Vern proudly served on the Town Board of Sun Prairie, appointed in 1984, and retiring after his 2016-2017 term. At the same time, he served on the Marshall Area District 14 EMS Commission. He was also a dedicated member of Sun Prairie United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee for many years. Vern and Dee were blessed with four children; Steven, Kathleen, Sharon and Susan. In 1967, they moved the family to Sun Prairie, to the home they built together. Family meant everything to them, and they cherished the time we spent together. Dad especially enjoyed watching his grandsons play baseball and football through the years. In the fall of 2015, Vern was thrilled to be able to enjoy the Badger Honor Flight with Steve. Vern is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dee, children Steve (D’Arcy) Pogue of Sun Prairie, Sharon (Alan) Frank of Deerfield, and Susan Kubly of Sun Prairie. He is further survived by grandsons Michael (Victoria) Pogue, Ryan, Tyler and Kevin Kubly; a sister Irene Weisensel, in-laws Floyd Gustrowsky, Ruth Pogue, Phyllis (Russell) Frentzel, Robert (Bonnie) Scheel, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his faithful dog, Bella. He was preceded in death by infant daughter, Kathleen Rae; his parents, brother Roy Pogue, sister Ione Gustrowsky, infant sister Arlene, in-laws Arthur & Ada (Hildebrandt) Scheel, Marcella Heiman, Joanne & Loren Beal and George Weisensel. We want to thank the staff of Wisconsin Dialysis-East for 8.5 years of great care, the Marshall Area EMS team, and his UW-Health care teams. All played a vital role in giving us his “bonus round”. The family suggests, In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established. A Celebration of Vern’s Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Sun Prairie United Methodist Church, 702 North Street, with Rev. Jenny Arneson presiding. Friends may call at the Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, Sun Prairie, on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, from 4-7 p.m., or from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at Church. Burial will be held in Medina Cemetery, Marshall. Know that you are loved and greatly missed…until we meet again. Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral & Cremation Sun Prairie, WI 608-837-5400 www.newcomerfh.com
