    SHUMAN - Dr. Vilda Shuman, 83, former resident and beloved pediatrician of Waycross, died December 27, 1998 at Budd Terrace, Atlanta, Ga. following a brief illness. A native of Monticello, Florida, Dr. Shuman was the daughter of the late James Henry Shuman and Lola Granger Shuman. She is survived by her sister, Nell S. Stone of Statesboro, namesake and niece, Vilda S. Brannen of Atlanta and her husband Joe Brannen and their children Bogan J. Brannen and Susannah L. Brannen, who lovingly called her Nana. She is also survived by many other nieces and nephews. Dr. Shuman graduated from the Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville, and the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tn. She interned at the Children's Memorial Hospital in Montreal, Quebec and at the Memorial Hospital in Albany, N.Y. She completed her pediatric residency at the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. and Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. Dr. Shuman practiced for two years in Richland, Wa., at an atomic bomb plant before moving to Waycross in 1948 to enter private practice. Dr. Shuman was a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Association of Georgia, the Georgia Pediatric Society, the Medical Womans International Association, the Southern Medical Association, the American Medical Women's Association, and the American Association of University Women. She was a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and a Life Member and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She served as President and Chief of the Pediatric Staff of the Ware County Hospital, and in 1963, served as President of the Ware County Hospital Staff. In addition to her private practice, Dr. Shuman was a pediatrician for the Crippled Children's Clinic sponsored by the Waycross Junior Woman's Club and a pediatrician for the Daisy Clinic sponsored by the Waycross Service League. Dr. Shuman was a member of the Georgia Committee on Children and Youth and in 1960, attended the White House Conference on Children and Youth. She served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Society for Crippled Children and Adults. In 1998, she was named by the Georgia Commission on Women as one of the Georgia Women Pioneers in Health Care. Other awards over the years have been Woman of the Year in Medicine from the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs, Alumnae Award from the Georgia State College Women, the Freedom Foundation Award, and the Alumnae Achievement Award from Vanderbilt University Medical School. At the request of Dr. Jonas Salk, Dr. Shuman chaired the Georgia building fund campaign for the Salk Institute and chaired the ``Vaccinate Before Too Late'' campaign where the Salk polio vaccine was first given. She also chaired the ``Sabin on Sunday'' campaign in 1963 when the Sabin Oral Vaccine for polio was first given. Dr. Shuman was also active in Pilot International and was the international president in 1965-66. At that time, Pilot had 470 clubs with more than 13,500 members in the United States, Canada, Hawaii, Bermuda, England, France and Japan. During her term, the service project was Project Hope and a pediatric ward was equipped on the SS Hope, the international charity hospital ship. Dr. Shuman was a member of First Baptist Church in Waycross and the Steadfast Sunday School Class. Funeral services will be on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Waycross First Baptist Church with Rev. Ray Sullivan officiating with interment following at Oaklawn Cemetery, Waycross. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the MUSIC FUNERAL HOME, in Waycross (912) 283-1414. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to First Baptist Church, 702 Elizabeth Street, Waycross, Ga. 31510
