Vincent Peter Dipuma, age 90, of Jackson, TN, left this life with his Lord and Savior June 23, 2009. He was known as 'Grandpa Vin' He was an active member of St. Mary's Church.
Vincent was born in New York City into a large Catholic Italian family. He was the younger of two brothers and six sisters. To him, "Family is everything,' as he told his daughters shortly before he died.
Grandpa was a builder, a thinker, a creator, and a doer. To him all things were possible. He started building bridges as a young volunteer in the Army Corp of Engineers. He was proud of being able to serve during the war. He then built his first home and went on to start his own company as a commercial contractor. He was trusted and respected by his clients. He has built schools, churches, hospitals, theaters, and many commercial buildings throughout New York and also Puerto Rico.
Grandpa loved his family and he loved to work. He loved creating and doing and being needed. He loved to serve. He was big and strong, yet gentle, kind, and generous. He had wisdom that we are still discovering.
Vincent was lucky enough to marry his one true love, Evelyn, who was called home to Jesus many years before and is waiting to receive him in Heaven. Together they have four daughters, which he later said the Lord knew better when he blessed him with his beloved daughters, Barbara, Vicky, Patty, and Laura. He never remarried and he raised his four young daughters as a single working parent to be strong and united. He loved God and always gave thanks. to Him. He worked hard but kept Sundays for God and family. He made the time to take his daughters to church and to instill in them a love for Jesus Christ and the celebration of Communion.
Grandpa visited his daughter, Laura, son-in-law, Keith, and three grandchildren, Vincent, Keith, and Jaclyn Nord in 1995 and has lived with them ever since as a vibrant member of their close knit family. He has greatly loved and been loved by them. He has contributed to their growth and love of God and family.
The amazing thing about Grandpa was his attitude and determination. No matter how much he hurt or how many things were wrong with him, he kept going. He constantly beat all odds. He is an inspiration to anyone that when life gets tough, you just keep going. All who knew Grandpa were amazed by what he could accomplish especially being legally blind, hard of hearing, fighting prostate cancer, and multiple other ailments.
Grandpa was often referred to as a character larger than life. He was always surrounded by his family who loved him very dearly and has granted his much wanted permission to be taken home by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Grandpa would have wanted to thank all of his close friends, especially Tom Lewis and Cloys Mattreny, who also cared for him and brought him closer to Christ.
Keith and Laura Nord feel so blessed to have had their father be a part of their daily lives and of their children, Vincent, Keith, and Jaclyn. What an incredible blessing he has been to our family.
Vincent has left behind his four daughters and son-in-laws, seven grandchildren, two of his sisters, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. We will miss him but are so very glad we had so much time with him.
