    DATE: Monday, March 31, 1997 Vincent J. Volmer 78, of Fort Wayne, died Friday at home. The Yankton, S.D., native retired as an accountant for Pittsburgh Plate Glass after 39 years and also worked for three years at City Glass Specialties and another three years at Deluxe Glass. His wife, Arlene, died in 1992. Surviving are a son, John L. Whiteside of Fort Wayne; sisters Mary A. Kalwat of Louisville, Ky., and Dorothy Louder of Draper, S.D.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in D.O. McCombs & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Ave., where calling is 6 to 8 p.m. today, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Memorials are to Fellowship Missionary Church or the Pregnancy Crisis Center. THE FORT WAYNE NEWS-SENTINEL

In 1919, in the year that Vincent J. Volmer was born, on January 6th, President Theodore Roosevelt died. Having gone to bed the previous night after being treated for breathing problems, the ex-President died in his sleep from a clot that had traveled to his lungs. He was 60. After a simple service, Roosevelt was buried on a hillside overlooking Oyster Bay.

In 1943, at the age of 24 years old, Vincent was alive when on June 20th through June 22nd, the Detroit Race Riot erupted at Belle Isle Park. The rioting spread throughout the city (made worse by false rumors of attacks on blacks and whites) and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.
