    Vincent John Urmann was born on January 23, 1919 in Ridgway, Pennsylvania to parents Louis Aloysius "Alois" Urmann (1890-1967) and Agnes Barbara Spangler (1889-1947). At the age of 21, Vincent registered for the draft on October 16, 1940, in Harborcreek, Erie, Pennsylvania, USA. He was employed at his father's farm at the time. Vincent then enlisted in the military on May 20, 1941, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He served in the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA, and held the rank of Private in the Selectees (enlisted men) category. During his service, Vincent was a PFC (Private First Class) in the U.S. Army's Company B, 104th Medical Battalion. He served from May 20, 1941, until August 15, 1945, when his military service ended. Throughout this period, he actively participated in World War II as a veteran. On January 15, 1949 he married Shirley Ruth Shawver (1923–1996). The couple had a son together, Carl Gene Urmann (1949-1994).
