  • Introduction

Vincent died over 70 years before I was born. I became drawn to the events of the Great War and incredible bravery of men involved, of ALL nations. Vincent was 'old' as a Private in the trenches. At 37 he would have been surrounded by young lads over 20 years his junior. I suspect Vincent would probably have been aware of the horror of the war before arriving in France and he wouldn't have possessed the sense of adventure of younger soldiers. My feeling is that Vincent would have faced the hell of trench warfare in the knowledge of its terrible reality. I went to see Vincent at Tyne cot Cemetery in 2005. He is remembered there, with his mates. His name is carved into a part of the walls where there is a pleasant view of the Belgian countryside.
