My grandmother was the sweetest Italian grandmother who spoke very little English. She came to the US all alone in 1906 on a ocean liner called the Konigin Louise. She sailed from Genoa, Italy to Ellis Island NYC. She had only $ 3 on her. As the story goes she met my grandfather Bernado "On the boat". Both on their way to the New World. They fell in love and got married.They moved to the Bronx where they had 4 children, Pasquale, Carlos, Nicolina (my mom) and Bianca. My mother met my father and they moved from the Bronx to Union Beach NJ. It was there that my grandmother came to live with us in 1967 and died in Feb of 1968. We loved her very much. Our fondest memories of her was going to the city and there would always be a pot of tomato sauce and pasta cooking on the stove. Also we loved to hear her "broken english". She was adorable. We were just kids when she died in our house but we have all remembered her and missed and will forever. They were very brave people. Immigrants on their journey to a better life.
