    Vi worked as an assistant manager at Dweck's Variety store and was loved by her customers. She was a member of Vernon Central Auxiliary. Vi and her husband donated 50 acres in 1960 for Roche Park which was dedicated earlier in the summer of 1972.

In 1922, in the year that Viola Roche was born, on June 22, coal miners in Herrin Illinois, were on strike (coal miners had been on strike nationally since April 1). The striking miners were outraged at the strikebreakers (scabs) that the company had brought in and laid siege to the mine. Three union workers were killed when gunfire was exchanged. The next day, union miners killed 23 strikebreakers and mine guards. No one, on either side, ever faced jail time.

In 1936, by the time he was only 14 years old, on November 3rd, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was reelected to a second term. He ran against Republican Governor Alf Landon (Kansas), defeating Landon in the popular vote by 60.8% to 36.5%. Vermont and Maine were the only two states in which Landon won. John Nance Garner IV became the Vice-President in this election.
