Violet Catherine (Rutherford) Mcfarlane of Collingwood Australia was born in 1892 to James Rutherford and Catherine Shaw Hill. She had a sister Margaret Jeanett Hill. She married Archibald McClaren McFarlane, and had children Archibald Rutherford McFarlane and Beryl Evis McFarlane. Violet Mcfarlane died at age 80 years old in 1972 in Collingwood, and was buried on July 21, 1972 at Fawkner Memorial Park Sydney Rd, in Fawkner, VIC.

In 1892, in the year that Violet Catherine (Rutherford) McFarlane was born, on January 1st, Ellis Island opened to process immigrants. 700 passed through on the first day - in the first year, 450,000 were processed. The processing center was originally a 3 story wooden building - with outbuildings - that burned down a few years later.

In 1904, when she was only 12 years old, the "Teddy's Bear" was first produced. After seeing a political cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to kill a clubbed and tied up bear, Jewish Russian immigrant Morris Michtom - who owned a candy shop and sold stuffed animals that he and his wife made at night at the store - made a "Teddy's Bear" and put it in his shop's window. The stuffed bears were an immediate success and Michtom and his wife went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
