He married Delores “Tootie” (Keesee) Mayhew in 1949 in Altavista, Campbell County United States and they later divorced. He had children Virgil Motley Mayhew, Sonja Gail (Mayhew) Shelton, and Jo Ellen (Mayhew) Venckus. Virgil Mayhew died at age 79 years old on February 24, 2006 at Home 907 7th Street, in Altavista, and was buried on February 27, 2006 at Altavista Memorial Park 642 Wards Rd, in Altavista.
