  • Introduction

Virgil was a World War II veteran. I was seven years old when my mother met Virgil and eventually moved in with him including myself and my sister. Virgil was a rancher in his early 50s at the time. He had a 40 acre ranch that he leased until the owner died. at one time there were 40 milk cows, 1 bull, 200 goats, a horse, four ponies, 4 dogs, a peacock, a peahen, two minks, a racoon, cats, chickens, ducks and geese. Virgil would start his day at 3 am and end it between 7-9pm every day of the week as animals never take the day off. He was a shrewd business man with an 8th grade education. He acted like a simple farmer but was quite intelligent. People who didn't know him well thought him as simple which he used to great advantage. He would whistle Polkas and sing much of the time when milking the cows. He played the accordion quite well. One of his favorite sayings was "50 years from now, who will know the difference?". In the evenings I would question him extensively about his time as a WWII Army soldier. He was in Australia during the early part of the war but ended up in Europe and in the Battle of the Bulge. He would speak of a woman he had met in Europe but had to leave her at the Rhine River when his unit had to move out. I don't think he ever got over her.
