Vera Vlasta was my Grandmother. She was commonly called "Pat" because "Vlasta" means "Patriotic" in Czech. Her maiden name was Pechal, and she married Jerry Joseph Chudej in 1943 or 1944. They had one son, Jerry Wayne Chudej, who is my Father. He was born on October 16, 1945. I am his daughter, Linda Michelle Chudej (married name: Kammerzell), born August 28, 1970. I have one daughter, Branwen Elisabeth, born December 11, 2002. My Grandmother was the daughter of Joe A. Pechal, and Antonia Hunka. Grandmother was born in Texas on September 11, 1911; and had four sisters: Nellie, Olga, Libbye, and Lillian. She and my Grandfather were neighbors, growing up, and married shortly after he returned from service in World War II. They attended the Hus School in Temple, Texas. My father spent his childhood in N. Carolina, where my Grandfather moved the family to work as a civil servant, after his honorable dischargefrom the Marine Corps.
My Grandmother was the kindest, gentlest, most loving woman I have ever known. She has inspired much of my life. She enjoyed baking, sewing, and gardening. She was a beloved wife and mother. My father tells stories of how she would spend hours playing with him when he was a child. She never changed, because she spent hours upon hours playing with me when I was a child. She taught me to sew and to cook. We adored her. She died on August 1, 1987 in Waco, Texas; and I miss her to this day.
