  • Obituary

The following obituary appeared in the Richmond Times-Dispatch in Richmond, Virginia, on Friday, April 7, 2006: RISCH Volkmar Rolf Risch died on April 4, 2006, at home, surrounded by the woods he loved and by family and friends who dearly loved him. Born in 1955 in Bremen, Germany, Volkmar's parents instilled in him a love of the outdoors that sustained him throughout his life. He graduated from Carl von Ossietzky University, Oldenburg, with a degree in education. On the trail of love and adventure, Volkmar crossed the great pond in 1984 to make Virginia his home. Volkmar taught German at University of Richmond, Trinity Episcopal School, Richmond Public Schools, Collegiate School, St. Catherine's, St Christopher's, and the German School of Richmond. But he found a workplace home at VCU where he spent nearly twenty years, much loved by his students, and among colleagues who were extraordinarily supportive of him in his year-long illness. With Mil Norman-Risch, Volkmar raised two wonderful children, Melanie, 14, and Christopher, 13, to whom he imparted his affinity for nature, his prowess in a canoe, and his love of life and people. Contrary to German stereotype, Vokmar was never on time, but when he arrived, he would happily sit for hours over a cup of coffee or a glass of beer, sharing in the day's events. As a boy, his father dubbed him a "Lebenskunstler" (an artist in living) and indeed he was. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Diethmar Risch; and is survived by his mother, Helga; his older brother, Ludwig; his fraternal twin, Detlef; his sister, Kerstin; and his partner and Dear Hear, Maria. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 8, at 2:30 p.m. at the Byrd Theater, West Cary Street, Richmond. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Volkmar's name to champion his beloved James River Association. or to support the incomparably helpful organization for cancer patients at Legal Information Network for Cancer.
