1847 World Events
In 1847, in the year that W. S Reynolds was born, on May 7th, In Philadelphia, an association of physicians and medical students was founded - the American Medical Association or AMA. The association, the first of its kind, wanted to create uniform standards for medical training, education, and practices.
In 1851, on April 28th, Santa Clara College - now Santa Clara University - was chartered. A private Jesuit college, it has remained in the same location for over 165 years. Originally all students were men but women were admitted in 1961.
In 1861, on February 11th the U.S. House voted unanimously to guarantee noninterference with slavery in any state, allowing states to decide whether they would allow slavery or not.
In 1922, the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C. on May 30th. More than 35,000 people attended the dedication including Lincoln's son, Robert Todd Lincoln, and many Union and Confederate veterans - although the audience was segregated. The Memorial took 10 years to complete.
In 1952, on February 6th, George VI of England died from a coronary thrombosis and complications due to lung cancer. His eldest daughter, age 25, immediately ascended the throne as Elizabeth II and her coronation was on June 2 1953.
